LeRoy Futterer

LeRoy Futterer LeRoy Futterer Dr. LeRoy A. Futterer of Manistee, the physician on Mackinac Island in the mid- 1950s, succumbed to cancer in Traverse City late Sunday night, December 7, 2008. He was 81.

He was born on July 6, 1927 in Joliet, Illinois, to Andrew and Marie Futterer. Following service with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II, he attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he was graduated from medical school in 1954.

He then moved to Michigan, where he began his internship, and spent one year as the primary physician on Mackinac Island.

He met Peggy Katherine Smith, a nursing student at St. Marys in Saginaw, and they were married October 13, 1956 in Midland.

Dr. Futterer completed his residency in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital, and spent much of his career in private practice in Manistee. In 1993, he then joined the staff of Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where he was instrumental in developing the hospitalist program. He retired in 2000.

He enjoyed sailing, skiing, and playing his baby grand piano.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy, a daughter, Dr. Rise Futterer, a son-in-law, Robert Lutfi, and a granddaughter, Emily Lutfi, of Madison, Wisconsin, and a daughter, Susan Futterer-Batdorff and her husband, Jack Batdorff, of Big Rapids.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 29, 2008, at Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee with the Reverend Celine Burke officiating. The family received visitors at the home Sunday, December, 28, and Monday, December, 29.
