Michigan Historical Commission To Meet June 3

The Michigan Historical Commission will meet at the Fort Mackinac Major's Quarters Wednesday, June 3, at 9 a.m. The board will discuss the implications of the state budget crisis for history programs and how it will respond to reductions in state funding.

The meeting on Mackinac Island fulfills the commission's desire to hold a longer meeting in a retreat format, said Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center and the exofficio secretary of the commission. Commissioners also want to study Mackinac Island State Park programs. Their agenda includes a tour of Fort Mackinac led by Phil Porter, director of Mackinac State Historic Parks.

The Michigan Historical Commission advises the director of the Department of History, Arts, and Libraries and approves Michigan Historical Markers, of which there are 25 on Mackinac Island.
