Polished and Poised for Lilac Festival Parade

Committee Seeks Consensus on Millage
      The finance committee was unable to reach a consensus on a 2009 millage rate at its meeting Monday, June 1. The rate used to assess taxes in 2008 was 8.85 mills and the proposed millage for 2009 is 8.0375, based on a rollback to compensate for retired debt and property value increases.

Shop Owners Will Compete in Festival Window Contest
      Shops along Main and Market streets will once again compete for the best Lilac Festival window display representing this year's theme, "American Circus: 1793- 1940." Ballots are available at the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau and everyone may vote on a favorite window.

Cause Undetermined in Deaths of Two Seasonal Island Workers
      Foul play or suicide are not suspected in the deaths of two seasonal workers on Mackinac Island last week, and police are awaiting autopsy results to help determine the cause. The couple, Blake Slentz, 26, and Bridgette Powers, 25, were found dead by a roommate in a downtown apartment on Mackinac Island at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, Chief of Police Jim Marks said.

Island Students Sample Careers
      Thirty-six Mackinac Island students got a taste of jobs as part of a job shadow program Wednesday, May 20. Students in the eighth through twelfth grades were placed in occupations in St. Ignace, Cheboygan, Petoskey, Sault Ste. Marie, and on Mackinac Island, said Susan Bennett, the program coordinator and high school mathematics teacher.

      The construction of an apartment approved by the city in 1988, but never finished by its owner, received Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) support Wednesday, May 3, following a public hearing.       Balloons filled the sky over Grand Hotel Friday afternoon, May 22, as men dressed in capes and feathered hats stood in the formation of a rosary in Grand Hotel's Tea Garden. Beacon Shines Again Over Straits From McGulpin Pt. Lighthouse
Interest in History Draws 1,000 People to 140-year-old Lighthouse
      Each night for about 100 years, the Lake Michigan bluff just west of Mackinaw City has been in darkness. That all changed Saturday, May 30, when the 140-year-old McGulpin Point Lighthouse, topped with a new lantern, was placed into service for sailors at a public lighting ceremony, and once again will mark the west entrance to the Straits.

Children's Artwork on Display at Library Through Lilac Festival
      The walls of the Mackinac Island Public Library are filled with color, as students at the Island school shows off their artwork there. The exhibit features works of students from kindergarten to 12th grade and themes from Mackinac Island folklore to German Expressionism.

      The winning design for the 2009 Lilac Festival Poster competition was created by Diane Neyer, of Mackinac Island and Traverse City. Mrs. Neyer is a self-taught artist and an avid gardener. Her love of gardening is seen in her work, which displays colorful flowers and landscapes.
