      Michi Mullings was crowned Lilac Queen and Hannah Styburski Lilac Princess while the Lilac Court and friends and family looked on, as an untimely rain forced the coronation of the 60th Lilac Queen and Princess to take place on the covered porch of the Windermere Hotel Friday, June 5.

Island Historic Buildings Open
      A Canadian trapper named Alexis St. Martin was accidentally shot in the stomach while trading furs on Mackinac Island 187 years ago last Saturday. He recovered well, but the wound healed to his skin, creating a permanent opening to his stomach and launching the digestion experiments of Dr. William Beaumont, the surgeon at Fort Mackinac.

Curator Shares Advice for Mackinac Lilacs

      The lilacs on Mackinac Island are old, and some of them are really old. While most of them are around 60 years old, there are a few lilacs closing in on 200 years. The older lilacs are a source of pride for the residents and a source of fascination for the tourists, but older lilacs can mean unhealthy lilacs, according to lilac curator Jeff Young.

Spirit of the North Offers Free Samples of Yoga Classes During Festival
      Spirit of the North Yoga Studio opened its doors Thursday, June 4, just in time for the Lilac Festival. Owner and yoga instructor Lisa Knaffla said she thinks it will be the perfect time to introduce her studio, on Main Street at the Yoder Dock, to the community. She will offer free community classes throughout the festival to introduce yoga.

New Island Group Welcomes All Knitters
      One corner of JL Beanery Coffeehouse is set aside for knitting and crocheting every Tuesday at 8:15 a.m., when several summer workers gather to share their favorite pastime and meet new faces. The idea of forming a knitting group came to LeeAnn Ewer, a historical interpreter at Fort Mackinac who learned to knit in college.

Drug Overdose Blamed in Deaths
      Autopsies on Blake Slentz and Bridgette Powers conclude the two died from a multi-drug overdose involving methadone, a prescription painkiller, and oxycodone, more commonly known as Oxycontin. The combination of the two drugs was the cause of death, Mackinac Island's Chief of Police Jim Marks said, who added that the results close the case.

Pavlov and Woodcox Promoted to Fort's Lead Interpreters
      Fort Mackinac historic interpreters Amy Pavlov and Geoff Woodcox have been promoted to lead interpreters this season. Interpreter work seasons begin in May or June and lasts until August or October, when the fort closes for visitors.

Swim Lessons To Begin June 23
      Swimming lessons will be offered at Grand Hotel every Tuesday and Thursday beginning June 23 and will continue until August 20. Lifeguard and swim instructor Andrew MacNeill will lead the lessons. Three classes will be offered: beginner swimming at 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., intermediate swimming at 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and advanced swimming at 10:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

      Mission Point Theater was filled this spring with music, colorful sets, and gingerbread men with the Mackinac Island Public School's production of "Hansel and Gretel."       Repaving work on the Mackinac Bridge is nearly complete and three lanes are open to traffic, the Mackinac Bridge Authority reported Friday, June 5. Construction crews are in the process of cleaning up after the project and will finish Wednesday, June 17.

      Reports from the Mackinac Island Police Department for May 27 to June 9: A call reporting a drunk and disorderly person on Third Street near Cadotte Avenue came in on Thursday, May 28, at 4:52 p.m. A Mackinac Island resident who was standing in the middle of the road became belligerent and started to swear while the police questioned him.

      The idea to teach children as well as adults how to grow lilacs came to Jan Young when she attended the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival with her husband, lilac curator Jeff Young. She now teaches the "Learning To Grow" program at Ste. Anne's Church during the annual Lilac Festival.

Library Book Sale Better Than Last Year
      A steady stream of browsers at the Mackinac Island Public Library book sale Saturday, June 6, made the sale a success, said librarian Anne St. Onge. The library made more money than last year, with $656 in book sales, despite having half the number of books for sale, Ms. St. Onge said.
