Island Employee Dinner Set for June 25

Ste. Anne's Church will host a third Island Employee Dinner Thursday, June 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meal will be sponsored by the restaurant Millie's on Main.

The meals, to be held weekly, offer a chance for Island employees to socialize with others working on the Island. The gatherings are nondenominational and are held in the basement of the church. Volunteers help with serving the food and cleaning.

"It's a wonderful service that the hotels and restaurants of Mackinac Island do for the employees," said church worker Val Porter. "It brings a lot of volunteers together. It's a wonderful way to create community bonding for summer workers and also Island employees."

Mrs. Porter said about 200 employees attend the dinners and the church also offers a large screen television, ping pong, foosball, and a pool table. She said the church encourages Island employees to come to the dinners and spend time.

"In fact, some years we've had some people bring musical instruments and have a little jam session," she said. "Actually, we welcome that kind of thing."

The previous dinners, held May 21 and June 18, were sponsored by Horn's Gaslight Bar and Restaurant and Murray Hotel, respectively. Future dinners will be every Thursday, following the June 25 meal. Sponsors for future dinners include Chippewa Hotel, Mackinac Island Yacht Club, Village Inn, and Patrick Sinclair's Irish Pub.

The businesses "have been really good," said Mrs. Porter. "Everybody's been very generous."
