Carriage Tours Employee Called to Middle East Service

A seasonal employee will get his wish and go to Afghanistan to work for a private security company. Chad Bennett, a driver for Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, flew there Sunday, June 14, after receiving word that he got the job last weekend.

He will be working for Armor Group, a security company guarding U.S. State Department personnel in Kabul.

Mr. Bennett, of Houghton Lake, served four years in the Marine Corps, four years in the U.S. Navy, and he served a sixmonth stint with another private overseas firm in 2004. Between such service he has worked in the oil fields of Louisiana and driven carriages on Mackinac Island.

For his latest job, he signed a one-year contract to work nine weeks at a stretch, followed by three weeks off. During his first vacation, he hopes to visit his son in New Zealand on his fifth birthday.

Packing for his new assignment, he said, "You've got to mentally prepare yourself, because it is what it is. I'm going for the money this time; it's really good money."

His parents, Jim and Ruth Bennett, live in Houghton Lake.
