Island Teens Practice Horsemanship Skills
      A great day, say seven Mackinac Island 4-H Horse Club members, includes spending time with horses. The local 4-H program gives them the opportunity to learn about horses and practice their riding skills, the teenagers say. "It's always nice to have a barn to go to," said Diana Dupre.

Web Camera Will Be on Bureau
      Approval was given by the Mackinac Island City Council to an online Web cam company to install a camera on top of the Tourism Bureau facing westward at their meeting Wednesday, July 1. The camera will be connected to the other cameras that stream to the site.

Novelty Items Remain Popular With Island Shoppers
      With the economy in the dumps across the country, gift and souvenir shop owners are seeing changes in their businesses, although perhaps not in the ways people might expect. Patty Schoenborn of Birches on Market Street says her tea sets are still one of the store's most popular items. The store's china is all made in the United States.

Family Fun Highlights July 4 Events
      Fort Mackinac is Michigan's only remaining fort from the American Revolution, and it will provide both the backdrop and the setting for celebrating the Fourth of July this year on Mackinac Island. Activities are planned both downtown and at the fort, and fireworks will burst overhead at dusk.

Legion Exhibit To Open July 4
      Chapman, St. Onge, Dankowski American Legion Post 299 will open an exhibit room in the Stuart House Museum Saturday, July 4. The room will display photographs and memorabilia related to the legion and Mackinac Island's military history.

      Reports from the Mackinac Island Police Department for the week of June 24 to June 30. A Grand Rapids man reported a stolen bike seat and seat cover at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 24. His bike was parked and locked at the Fort Street bike rack the night before and he discovered the missing items the next morning.

Bible School Begins Monday
      Vacation Bible School is planned at Ste. Anne's Church for Monday, July 6, through Thursday, July 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It is free and open to children ages three and older. School organizer Jennifer Callewaert said the subjects for this year are Moses and Exodus.

Mackinac Island School Board Adjusts Old Budget, Adopts New One
      The Mackinac Island Public School Board of Education amended a $1,475,592 general fund budget for the 2008-2009 year, and adopted its 2009-2010 budget to $1,570,130 at a meeting Thursday, June 25. The Budget Committee met Thursday to discuss budget adjustments, and a budget hearing and board meeting followed.

Puttkammer Wins Mayor's Choice Award
      A 1919 vintage Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, owned by Charles Puttkammer of Mackinac Island, captured the Mayor's Choice award for a pre-World War II car at the 2009 Antiques on the Bay in St. Ignace Saturday, June 20. Mr. Puttkammer's classic car was entered in the 13th annual event and was the first time he placed the vehicle in competition since he bought it in 1998.

Arts Council To Host Drop In and Draw
      The Mackinac Arts Council is hosting a Drop in and Draw program at Community Hall, an opportunity for both children and adults to learn or practice art skills. The children's program is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 9, 16, 23, and 30. Admission for children ages eight to 12 is free. The adult program is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the same dates, plus August 6 and 13.

Ste. Anne's Church Fundraiser, Mixed Golf Tourney Results Reported
      Twenty-seven golfers participated in Ste. Anne's Church fundraiser at Wawashkamo Golf Course Sunday, June 28, with first place in the scramble tournament going to the team of Brian Lents, Justin Lents and Michael Gamble, with a score of 30. The second place team, with a score of 31, consisted of Steve Moskwa, Rockwell Williams, Dan March, and Jaret Yatch.

      Wawashkamo Golf Course hosted its Mens Member Guest Tournament June 25 to 27, with one highlight being a cocktail party at the home of Larry and Kay Berke at Tamarack Cottage. Best ball competition Friday was won by Tim Conroy and Ron Morden with a score of 62. Randy Stuck and Jim Sutika took second place with 65.

Hearing To Be July 9 on Mackinac Bridge Commuter Card Program
      A public hearing is planned Thursday, July 9, at 11:45 a.m. at Little Bear East Conference Center in St. Ignace for two proposals regarding the commuter fare program at the Mackinac Bridge. Commuters will have 24 hours to get across the Mackinac Bridge and back to receive discounted fare under the two proposals to be voted on July 10 by the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
