NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

As we approach August, all of the gardens on Mackinac are just beautiful. There is a wide variety of flowers and colors, ranging from hydrangeas to the Mackinac hollyhocks. It is so refreshing just to take a stroll and enjoy the beauty and watch the wildlife, such as ducks, otters, and geese, swim in the Straits of Mackinac. It is truly an awesome sight.

Mackinac was saddened Friday, July 31, to learn of the death of Lorabeth Fitzgerald, prominent East Bluff cottager for the past 48 years and a member of Little Stone Church. Lorabeth was a delightful lady with a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor. She loved the Island and enjoyed her cottage with its magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac and all the summer gatherings with her many friends. The Mackinac Island community extends deepest sympathy to her family.

Dan Chambers, son of the late Gunn and Evelyn Chambers, died Tuesday, August 4, at his home in Muskegon. Dan was the brother of Ed of Mackinac and Pat of Muskegon. Island friends extend deepest sympathy to the family.

Huge Shasta daisies and lavender sage line the walkway at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club, greeting the many guests. It is very attractive and welcoming.

All the children of Cal and Mary Rogers gathered in St. Ignace Saturday evening, August 1, to celebrate Cal's birthday. Wonderful food and great conversation was enjoyed by all.

The Dennis Bradley, Jr. family of New York are visiting Chief Dennis and Jackie Bradley at their home in Harrisonville.

The annual Mackinac Island Community Foundation Appreciation Reception will be Thursday, August 13, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Mackinac Island Community Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Walter "Skip" and Cindi Kutsop celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary Wednesday, July 29, by spending the evening at Grand Hotel. Skip and Cindi are from Mountainside, New Jersey, and own a condominium in the Mission. They've been coming to the Island for more than 20 years and really love Mackinac. Skip gave Cindi a beautiful diamond wedding band to commemorate the occasion. Skip and Cindi were married at Ste. Anne's Church. Congratulations from Island friends.

Brian and Barbara Hellis entertained friends from Maryland last week. They met the couple on an Alaskan cruise. Brian's daughter, Jill Farron, and family from the Detroit area are enjoying Mackinac this week.

Many members of the Murray family will gather on Mackinac for a family reunion this week. Folks will travel from far and near to join in the festivities.

Happy belated birthday to Tim Plutchak July 30. He and his wife, Sherry, spent the weekend at their lovely cottage in Forest Bluff.

Bob Gillespie will celebrate his birthday August 12. Have a great day.

Brian Dunnigan arrived on Mackinac Friday, July 31, to join his family, Candi, Claire, and James, for his annual twoweek vacation. Claire attended a band camp in Grass Lake for a week. Happy birthday to Candi August 9.

Richard Cebelak of Grand Rapids joined his wife, Pat, who is employed at Grand Hotel, for the weekend. They were guests of the Windermere Hotel.

Marsha and Chuck Kleber enjoyed hosting their daughter, Kari Martin, granddaughter, Lyrik Martin, grandson, Drexel Kleber, and grandchildren, Hadley, Kellson, and Macklin Kleber, during the month of July. The Klebers' niece and nephew, Katie and Chuck Pereny, of Port Lucie, Florida, rented a house on Mackinac for the month of July. Everyone had a great time.

It is so nice to see Peggy Cowell back on Mackinac after spending 21 days in the hospital. She is doing well and is thrilled to be home.

Don't forget the Garden Party at Ste. Anne's Rectory Sunday, August 9, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., where participants will see Father Rey Garcia's beautiful gardens and enjoy refreshments. Proceeds will benefit the Stained Glass Repair Fund.

Happy birthday August 11 to Becki Splett of Bloomer, Wisconsin. We miss you on Mackinac.

The annual Guns and Hoses baseball game will be Sunday, August 23, at Great Turtle Park. Proceeds will benefit the Mark Gallagher Scholarship Fund.

Kathy Andress organized the Red Cross Blood Drive Wednesday, August 5, at Community Hall. It was a great success.

Congratulations to Frank and Joan Nephew on their 60th wedding anniversary August 14, and Frank's 80th birthday. Island friends send best wishes.

Mark Chambers, Jean La- Borde, and Dave Rowe had a great time sailing on Dave's boat, Wild Honey, last week. They sailed to Little Current, Gore Bay, and the North Channel. A great time was enjoyed by all.

Island friends send greetings to Charlie Thompson, who will celebrate his birthday August 13.

Rosie Charnes, with her son, Bob, and granddaughter spent a week at Rosie's house in Harrisonville. They returned to Indianapolis, Indiana, Sunday, August 2, but will come back later in the month and spend more time on Mackinac.

Jim and Susan Lenfestey of Minneapolis, Minnesota, are enjoying their lovely cottage on the East Bluff.

Richard Chambers spent several days on Mackinac during the Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race. Richard is spending the summer in Clark Lake at the home of his late grandfather, Dick Johnson.

The annual Mackinac Island Medical Center Auction will be Sunday, August 30, at Grand Hotel. Donations would be greatly appreciated and may be dropped off at the Mackinac Island Medical Center. Raffle tickets are available from Vic Callewaert or Kay Hoppenrath.

Jaimie Dunham and family from Maryland are visiting his mother, Phyllis, at her cottage on French Lane.

The Jamie Bynoe Hockey Tournament will be Sunday evening, August 9, in front of the post office. Come and join in the fun.
