Community Foundation Celebration Is August 13

Over the last 15 years, the Mackinac Island Community Foundation has given more than $1 million in grants to the community. In recognition of those who have supported the foundation through the years, the public is invited to a community celebration Thursday, August 13, at Community Hall on Market Street from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Established in 1994, the foundation has 53 endowed funds and eight unendowed funds designed to improve life on the Island, impacting the environment, residents, and visitors. Endowed funds total approximately $3.6 million, with proceeds used for scholarships for Island residents, projects, and programs. In 2008, the foundation awarded 70 grants totaling $129,131.

In reaching 15 years serving the community, Executive Director Robin Dorman said, a special effort was made to invite past board members and directors. The event, he said, will be a community gathering and the opportunity to learn more about the foundation from current and past board members. Refreshments are being donated by Goodfellow's at the Lake View.

The board of trustees of the foundation includes Chair Kathy Lewand, Vice Chair Carol Rearick, President Dan Musser III, Secretary Margaret Doud, Treasurer Mike Young, and trustees Penny Barr, Jennifer Bloswick, Brad Chambers, Jack Dehring, Chuck Kleber, Kim Kolatski, Wes Maurer Jr., Mary K. McIntire, Walter North, Lorna Straus, and Randy Stuck.
