Wawashkamo's Hickory Stick Classic Set for August 14-15

The annual Hickory Stick Classic at Wawashkamo Golf Course will start Friday, August 14, with a shoot out and cookout starting at 4 p.m. and will continue Saturday, August 15, at 9:30 a.m. with the tournament.

Fred "Fritz" George, Wawashkamo PGA Professional, said he is expecting the number of golfers to be close to the limit of 44.

The game is played using hickory club shafts instead of modern golf clubs and the players will be dressed in period appropriate clothes. The game is played similar to how it was played in the 19th century.

Mr. George is searching for someone to play the bagpipes at the tournament.

"It's a nice event and golf course," Mr. George said. "Players love to come here because this is a golf course that hasn't changed."

Many of the golfers in the tournament own their own sets of hickory clubs, although clubs are also available for rent.
