North, Skutt Plan Stunt as Benefit
      Mike North and Craig Skutt plan to water-ski, and possibly ride a tube, to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace in the wake of a Star Line ferry boat at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 22, to raise money for the St. Ignace Festivals and Fireworks campaign and the Pet-Fix program.

Painters Say They Each Take Something Different From Class
      Few classes taught today last five hours and include snacks and dinner parties, but few classes today are taught by Richard "Dick" Wolfgang. Mr. Wolfgang, of Paintings by Wolfgang, has taught watercolor painting for three years, and, Sunday, August 23, his students, Tim Leeper, Molly Carroll, and Diane Sprengel, will have their first show.

Mark Gallagher Golf Tournament Is Saturday
      The seventh annual Mark Gallagher Open golf tournament will take place Saturday, August 22, at 2 p.m. at Wawashkamo Golf Club. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Mark Gallagher scholarship, which aids students of the Mackinac Island Public School hoping to pursue a career in criminal justice. The scholarship is funded by the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

Yacht Club Will Host Yard Sale Fundraiser
      The Mackinac Island Yacht Club will hold a yard sale Wednesday, August 26, from 9 a.m. to noon behind the Market Street building across from the marina. Yacht club items for sale include dishes, lamps, bedding, and paintings. Proceeds will be donated to Mackinac Associates, a support group that raises money for Mackinac State Historic Parks projects.

Poetry Gathering To Be August 27
      The annual Anne's Tablet Poetry Gathering will take place at the East Bluff landmark Thursday, August 27, at 4 p.m. The gathering is informal and all are invited to attend, say organizers Susan Allen and Jim Lenfestey. They encourage residents and visitors to bring poems they love, their own or others, to read or recite around the serene memorial to Island writer Constance Fenimore Woolson.

Helping Riders Improve Communication Skills Is Goal of Clinic
      Members of the Mackinac Horsemen's Association got back to the basics Monday, August 3, in a horse clinic with instructor Susan Bellinger. Mrs. Bellinger offered adult group sessions, youth group sessions, and private lessons during her two-day stay on the Island, helping riders improve their form and communication with horses.

      Traveling 250 miles by bicycle, followed by a 20-minute ferry ride, nine Boy Scouts from Troop 65 out of Wood Dale, Illinois, reached Mackinac Island Friday, August 7. They were on their annual High Adventure Trip.

      Five bats tucked themselves behind a "No Bikes" sign in the northern entryway of the Mackinac Island Public School for their daily sleep before roaming the night sky Monday, August 10. School secretary Barb Fisher said sometimes the brick walls outside are coated with them.

Sailors Say Start Was Slow, but Finish Was Great for MacMan
      The boat Stryder, owned by skipper John Smulders, won overall and won its class for the Mackinac to Manitoulin International Yacht Race, called the MacMan, despite a slow start Thursday, July 23.

LaPines Mark 60th Anniversary
     Robert "Porky" and Caroline LaPine celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a party hosted by their children at the Community Hall Saturday, August 8. The two were both born on Mackinac Island and grew up together, Mrs. LaPine said, and got married on the Island August 6, 1949. They attended the Thomas W. Ferry School, now the Indian Dormitory.

     Jim and Julie (nee Barch) Fisher of Mackinac Island announce the birth of their son, Jordan James Fisher, born Thursday, August 13, 2009, at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. He weighed 7 pounds, 5.25 ounces at birth and measured 19 inches in length. He is the couple’s first child.
