Michigan Musicians To Headline Grand Hotel’s Jazz Weekend

Photography of Atlanta, Georgia) Renowned jazz musicians from Michigan will be featured at Grand Hotel’s popular Labor Day Jazz Weekend from Friday, September 4, through Monday, September 7. Performers include master guitarist Earl Klugh and two-time Grammy-winning singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. The weekend also will include Sheila Jordan, Dearborn native Steve Richko, Ann Arbor native Mr. B, Lansing based Shout Sister Shout, and B.A.S.I.C. from Ypsilanti.

Scheduled for Saturday, Mr. Klugh, Ms. Bridgewater, and Ms. Jordan will perform a noontime concert series in the Tea Garden and evening concerts in the Theatre. Mr. B and Shout Sister Shout play at the Grand Stand and Mr. Richko will be in the Cupola Bar.

Sunday morning will be an inspirational gospel performance with the soulful sounds of B.A.S.I.C.’s on the hotel’s front porch.

(Photograph by Philippe Pierangeli) Mr. Klugh has more than 30 albums, with 23 making the top 10 billboard jazz chart and four of those hitting number one. His last album, “The Spice of Life,” released in 2008, earned him his 12th Grammy nomination and features songs noted as iTunes’ best-selling jazz song and number one for 12 consecutive weeks on the Radio and Records Smooth Jazz Indicator.

Ms. Bridgewater is a multifaceted singer with prestigious accolades, including two Grammys in 1998 for Jazz Vocal Performance and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal, a Tony Award for her performance as Glenda the Good Witch in “The Wiz” on Broadway, and a Lawrence Olivier Award for her portrayal as Billie Holiday in “Lady Day.” She currently hosts the National Public Radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. The two interview jazz artists from around the globe.

Grand Hotel music director and acclaimed jazz player Alex Graham and his musicians will open both afternoon performances.

For those who are not staying at the hotel, the cost for tickets is $65 and includes a picnic lunch.

Radio personality Paul Anthony will interview the headliners Saturday and Sunday mornings, in sessions that have become so popular they have been moved to the hotel Theater. Both sessions are free and open to the public.

“Michigan is the home to some of the world’s most famous musicians, and there is no better place to celebrate our jazz greats than at the state’s iconic Grand Hotel,” said R. D. Musser III, President of Grand Hotel. “The Labor Day Jazz Weekend is not only a chance to hear remarkable music at a stunning location, but to support the talents of our state.”

Below is a schedule of the weekend's performances. Events are free, except the afternoon shows and luncheons in the Tea Garden. Proper attire is requested for evening concerts. Hotel guests will receive early admittance to Tea Garden seating both Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11:45 a.m. All nonguests will be admitted between 12 p.m. and 12:15 p.m. Afternoon concerts begin at 12:30 p.m.
