Island Horses Heading for Winter Vacation
      Leading a team of four horses tied together is normal for this time of year, said Mark “Beau” Bielinksi (left) of Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. When fewer bicycles are on the road later in the fall, up to seven can be tied together for the trip to the Arnold boat dock as the horses begin their winter migration to a farm in Pickford.

Island, 3 Boat Companies Begin Franchise Talks
      Broad authority over the three boat companies that serve Mackinac Island is a power that the city has exercised in a limited manner, says attorney Mike Cavanaugh. That could end this year. With the ferry franchise agreement set to expire March 31, 2010, the city has begun talks with the boat lines over boat schedules, particularly in the off season, ticket prices, and the franchise fee.

Superintendent Bootz Wants To Bring Firm, Fair Policies To School

      Michael Bootz of Mackinaw City was offered the interim superintendent position at Mackinac Island Public School through January 1. The board of education reached the decision Thursday, September 24, during its regular meeting, accepting the recommendation of the ad hoc committee that interviewed four candidates for the position.

      Applications are due November 1 for grants being offered by the Mackinac Island Community Foundation. Grants will be awarded in early December.       Nominations for Mackinac Island's Recreation Volunteer of the Year are being accepted until Tuesday, November 24, and may be turned in at Community Hall. The winner is expected to be announced in December. Applications for nominations are available in the lobby of the city offices on the second floor of Community Hall.

      Brenda Bunker was appointed to serve on the Mackinac Island Community Foundation board of trustees during the board's annual meeting Friday, September 11. She replaces Kim Kolatski, who resigned after 10 years on the board. Mrs. Kolatski will continue in her position as advisor to the Youth Advisory Committee and will remain on the Grants Committee.

      Mike Rowe and the crew from the cable program, "Dirty Jobs," returned to Mackinac Island last week for the second visit in two years. They were filming scenes for the final show of the season that will include Mackinac Island venues. Filming ended Thursday, September 17, and the Discovery Channel show is expected to air in early March.

Experts Offer Advice for Swine Flu Immunization, Seasonal Flu Shots
      With two strains of flu circulating this year, experts are advising everyone to be immunized for both. Immunizations will be made available this month for seasonal flu, and dispensers are being asked by the Centers for Disease Control to get the vaccine to the public as soon as they have it this year.
