Lakers Girls, Boys Sweep NLL Season Openers Against Rockets

The Mackinac Island Lakers girls and boys basketball team swept the Paradise Rockets in the Northern Lights League home weekend series season opener Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5.

Lakers Girls Post Victories

The Lakers defeated the Rockets 55-20 Friday evening, and Saturday morning, downed the visitors 39-26.

"I was pleased with our overall play, especially our passing during the two games," said Lakers Coach Mary Patay.

In the opener, the Lakers breezed to a 19-1 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 10- 5 advantage in the second quarter for a 29-6 halftime margin. They outscored the Rockets 26-14 in the second half.

Coach Patay played her younger players in the second half Saturday, but the Lakers held a 29-10 halftime margin before Paradise cut the final score to 13 with a 16-10 advantage in the second half.

Begin Season With Wins

The Mackinac Island boys defeated Paradise 54-33 Friday evening and upended the Rockets 53-25 Saturday morning.

The Lakers trailed 11-9 after the first eight minutes in the opener before outscoring the Rockets 15-6 in the second quarter for a 24-17 halftime lead.

Mackinac Island held a 30-16 advantage in the second half that included 13-9 in the third quarter and 17-7 in the final eight minutes.

Lakers statistics: Tymon Horn, 28 points, eight of 12 from the free throw line; Paul Fisher, 11 points; Thomas Rilenge, seven points; Collin Armstrong, five points; Anthony Rickley, two points; Todd Fridline, one point.

Three players scored in double figures to lift the Lakers in the win Saturday. Mackinac Island led 24-15 at halftime and outscored the Rockets 29-10 in the second half.

Lakers statistics: Tymon Horn, 20 points, 12 of 17 from the free throw line; Paul Fisher, 15 points; Thomas Rilenge, 10 points; Anthony Rickley, Collin Armstrong, Todd Fridline, two points.

Mackinac Island will travel to South Bass Island, Ohio, to battle the Put-in-Bay Panthers Friday, December 11.
