Book Captures Hadden History Several years before she died in 2000, Frances Roots Hadden of Mackinac Island and St. Ignace began a book about her father, Bishop Logan Roots, and his wife, Eliza Lydia McCook, and their lives as Christian missionaries in China during the first three decades of the 20th century. The book was to be a compilation of letters the two Following her death, the project was taken up by her friend and editor, Motoko Huthwaite, and two of her grand-nieces, Ellen Roots McBride and April Roots Prewitt, and, after 10 years, the book was published in January. "From China with Love" is a family portrait drawn from the love letters of the couple, shared as Bishop Roots traveled through China, Europe, and the United States. Mrs. Hadden, and her brother, Sheldon Roots, were well-loved residents of Mackinac Island, first coming here with Moral Re- Armament. She and her husband, Richard, a noted concert piano duo, moved to St. Ignace in later life. The book Mrs. Hadden undertook more than a decade ago is published and sold by EastBridge Books in Norwalk, Connecticut. |
