Sault Ste. Marie, not Island, Has Oldest Church

To the Editor:

In Rebecca Jaskot's July 9 article "Architectural Tour Gives History of Mackinac Island Buildings," Ms. Jaskot incorrectly cites Ste. Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island as the "oldest" church in Michigan. The oldest Catholic Parish in Michigan is St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Sault Ste. Marie. The Marquette Diocese has a nice Web site for each parish in the Upper Peninsula at www.dioceseofmarquette.org. St. Mary's dates to 1668 and the previous pastor was Father Ted Brodeur of Mackinac Island. Both St. Mary's and Ste. Anne's were founded by the Jesuits and both were instrumental in the European development in this area.
