3 Charged With Armed Robbery

Two men have confessed to armed robbery and home invasion and they and a third suspect were arraigned Tuesday, July 13, in 92nd District Court. The three suspects were taken into custody early Tuesday morning on Mackinac Island. Antwan Johnson, 32, is held without bond. Kyle Carter, 22, is held on $250,000 bond, and Justin Turner, 24, is held on $150,000 bond, the Mackinac County Prosecutor’s Office reported. The three are charged with two counts armed robbery, one count conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and first degree home invasion. A habitual offender notice has been filed against Mr. Johnson for a prior methamphetamine conviction in Indiana. Two of the subjects are from the Detroit area and the third is from Illinois. A preliminary examination is scheduled for all three July 27.

Michigan State Police Trooper Mike Peterson, while on foot patrol about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, heard screams coming from a nearby apartment and spotted three men running, one with a bat. He was able to detain two of the subjects and the third escaped, but was taken into custody at 7:30 a.m.

The suspects confessed that they entered an apartment with the intent of recovering money that they said was owed to them. They beat a man with a bat and then stole about $300 in cash from the man and his girlfriend.

Mackinac Island Police officers Bryan Gibson and Bob Boerkoel assisted in the arrests. The investigation is being conducted by Michigan State Police from the St. Ignace Post.
