Bat Positive for Rabies in Eastern Mackinac County
      A bat found in eastern Mackinac County has been tested positive for rabies, the Luce Mackinac Alger Schoolcraft District Health Department announced Friday, July 23. People who came in contact with it have been advised and have sought appropriate treatment.

Helmet Design Deadline Nears
      Design submissions for the Mackinac Island Community Foundation Mackinac Island official bicycle helmet are due Sunday, August 15. Entry forms for submitting artwork are available from the Community Foundation at its office on Hoban Street and on its Web site.

School Board Hires Teacher, Cuts Half-time Custodial Position
      A new social studies teacher, Christopher Schoonover, was hired and a half-time custodial position was cut by the Mackinac Island school board Thursday, July 22. Mr. Schoonover was graduated from Michigan State University, where he studied social science with a concentration in public policy and a minor in history. He was selected after two days of interviews with 10 candidates.

      The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive Wednesday, August 4, from noon to 6 p.m. at Community Hall on Market Street. Walkins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged to make the process run more efficiently. To schedule an appointment, call Kathy Andress at 847-6467.

EMT Class To Be Offered
      An EMT Basic course will be held on Mackinac Island from Monday, September 13, until Saturday, January 22. Mark Wilk of Allied EMS will be the instructor, and participants must be 18 years of age by January 22. No prior training is required and this course will train the students to have the minimum qualifications needed to work on an ambulance.

Would Bike Tours Negatively Impact Park? Commissioners Deliberate
Permit Request Set Aside for Second Time
      A plan to offer guided bicycle tours in the Mackinac Island State Park was tabled again last week by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, which wants continued study of the matter. At its meeting Friday, July 23, commissioners were urged to allow the visitor service by bicycle rental operator Ira Green, and discouraged by Mackinac Island Carriage Tours President Bill Chambers.

Murray Realty Relocates to Market Street
      Murray's Mackinac Realty has opened an office this season in the Carousel Shops on Market Street. The real estate company was started five years ago by Jerry and Steve Murray and was previously operated from offices in St. Ignace and near British Landing. This winter, Jerry Murray became the sole owner of the company and felt that a downtown storefront was needed.

      Action on the Hubbard's Annex historic district and appointments to the city's new Historic District Commission have been tabled for two weeks while the city seeks unspecified legal advice about its ordinance. Report: Plane Attempted Take-off 3 Times Before Crash
      A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board reveals the Beechcraft 58 twin-engine airplane that crashed at St. Ignace July 13 attempted to take off twice before it crashed on its third take-off attempt on the highway west of the Mackinac County Airport.
