After reading the article on “Cubbie,” [Mackinac Island Town Crier, February 2011] I started thinking of summers spent at the McNally Cottage as a boy. I got the family photographs out and started going back and looking at all of the old photographs.

Our family was on vacation one summer when we heard about Cubbie. I asked my father if we could go see him. “Sure,” he said, “let’s go.”

When we got there, a large group of people were all around Cubbie, so my father put me on his shoulders so I could see little Cubbie better.

I remember that any horses that got too close, their eyes got real big and they would start whining and try to back away. Little did I know then that the fear was ingrained in their DNA. It didn’t matter that Cubbie was a little bear, and the horses never saw a bear cub before, it was plain horse sense, or was it scent?

My father could not get any photos because of all of the people, so we walked back to Main Street. Instead of turning left to the McNally Cottage, we turned right and started walking toward the Windermere Hotel.

There was this man walking toward us. My father stopped, and when this man got close enough, he asked if he could take a picture of him. The man was very nice, as I remember, and said, “okay.” My father took the snapshot, thanked him, and we went our separate ways.

I asked who he was, and my father replied that he was Jimmy Durante. He told me that Mr. Durante was on the Island with Esther Williams, filming the movie, “This Time For Keeps.”
