NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

It’s lilac time on Mackinac! The 62nd Annual Lilac Festival will begin Friday, June 10. The warm weather has made the lilacs pop into bloom, and their fragrance is permeating the air. It truly is a special time. The 2011 Lilac Queen will be crowned on Windermere Point Saturday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. The Grand Parade will be Sunday, June 19, at 4 p.m. Come and join in the fun.

The weather has been very nice, with warm days and cool nights. The lawns are lush green and the lady’s-slippers, lily of the valley, and blue and white forget-me-nots cover the woods. The sunrises and sunsets have been magnificent. People line the boardwalk to watch the sun slowly descend behind the Mackinac Bridge as the reflection dances on the Straits of Mackinac. It truly is a breathtaking sight.

Friday, June 3, Governor Rick Snyder signed the Swing Bed Bill, introduced by State Representative Frank Foster, at the Mackinac Island Medical Center. It truly was a historic occasion, with a large gathering of people who attended the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce Conference. Many folks from St. Ignace and Mackinac were in attendance.

We give a warm welcome to Governor Rick Snyder and his family, who spent several days on Mackinac last week. He attended the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce Conference. The family is enjoying the Governor’s residence with its magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac.

We wish a very happy birthday to Mark Chambers June 13. I’m sure Clara will help you blow your candles out.

It’s nice to see Wayne Jungman back on Mackinac visiting Phyllis Dunham.

We give a warm welcome to our new Michigan State Police Trooper Liz Hunt and her daughter. Trooper Hunt is from the Bay City Post.

It was great to see Dennis Brodeur at the 2011 graduation Friday, May 27, for his granddaughter, Morgan Brodeur- Bunker. I had a wonderful visit with him.

Happy first birthday to little Tyler Cawthorne June 3. I’m sure your big brother, Kaden, helped blow the candles out.

Ed, Megan, and little Payton McNulty have been visiting grandmother, Marti McIntire, great-grandmother, Margaret McIntire, and family members, Alex Winkel, Mary K. McIntire, and Becki Barnwell and family.

The annual Mackinac Island Community Foundation appreciation gathering will be Thursday, June 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Community Hall.

Best wishes to Bob and Linda Cheeseman of St. Ignace, who will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary June 14. Bob has been employed by the City of Mackinac Island for the past 20 years at the Mackinac Island Cemetery.

Dan and Virginia Riordan and their two faithful companions, Annie and Kobe, have arrived from their winter home in Marietta, Georgia. It’s nice to have them back on the Island.

The Mackinac Island Lakers girls golf team traveled to Ironwood Thursday, June 2, for the State Finals. Congratulations to the team on their fourth place win.

Jody Chambers took her son, Robert, to Northern Michigan University in Marquette Friday, June 3, where he will be a junior this fall.

A blue heron has returned to the Little Jewel Golf Course each year. He is fascinating to watch when playing golf, as he follows people around the course. Well, he’s back, and he visited Windermere Point Friday afternoon, June 3. Mother Nature is so interesting to watch.

Two very special brothers, Gary and Larry LaPine, will celebrate their birthday June 17. They’re both patients at the long term care facility in St. Ignace, and would love to receive birthday greetings from their many Island friends.

Mary K. McIntire arrived on Mackinac last week and is enjoying her home on Lakeshore Drive.

It is so nice to see Marvin Lee May back making fudge at May’s Famous Fudge Shops. He is studying for his master’s degree in art education at the Art Institute in Chicago.

Dennis and Cynthia Caw- thorne are enjoying their lovely cottage at British Landing.

The annual Manoogian Art Show reception was hosted by the Musser family Sunday, June 5, at Grand Hotel. It’s always a pleasure to see Richard and Jane Manoogian. Jane is having a lot of fun with her new five-month-old golden retriever puppy named Amber.

It was nice to see Paula Mc- Namara Underwood, Janis Holle, and Wes and Mary Maurer at the Manoogian Art Show reception Sunday, June 5.

Congratulations to Hannah Chambers, Graham Young, and Audrey Murray, who were graduated from Petoskey High School Sunday, June 5.

Mother Nature is fascinating to watch. Monday, June 6, a mother starling was feeding her baby on the lawn of the Windermere Hotel. The little one would open its mouth and receive the food from the mother. We didn’t get much work done in the office; we were too busy watching the birds.

Jay and Janet Stingel are comfortably settled into their lovely Brigadoon Cottage with its magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac.

It was wonderful to see Dr. Joe and Thelma Solomon of Kingsport, Tennessee, Monday, June 6. They were in St. Ignace to attend the memorial service for Thelma’s brother-in-law, Prentiss Dettman, Tuesday, June 7. Dr. Solomon was the Island doctor for 17 years. He and Thelma were married on Mackinac Island 52 years ago.

Robert and Susie Raisch are enjoying their Star Cottage in Hubbard’s Annex. It was nice to see them at the Manoogian Art Show.

Larry and Nancy Keogh have arrived at their lovely Crosstrees Cottage on the East Bluff.

Bart and Nina Huthwaite have returned to their lovely home in Woodbluff on Mackinac from their winter home in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Pete and Marta Olson of Harbor Springs enjoyed the Manoogian Art Show Sunday, June 5.
