Virginia Alexander


Virginia Alexander Virginia Alexander Virginia J. Alexander, 89, of Mackinaw City, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 10, 1922, in New Castle, Pennsylvania to Roy and Emily (nee Burns) Cole. They moved to Carp Lake in 1933, where she attended Levering schools. She was graduated from Pellston High School at age 16 in 1939. She worked at the Straits Inn Hotel and then for Dr. Walter Larson before marrying Thomas N. Alexander October 4, 1941, in Mackinaw City.

During the early war years, Mrs. Alexander worked rifling barrels at the G.M. plant in Saginaw. She and her husband owned and operated the Gull Harbor Motel and cabin rentals in Mackinaw City for nearly 40 years. She was a member of the Mackinaw City Woman’s Club and enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, and spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Alexander was an avid agate hunter. She also volunteered as a pageant participant for the Fort Michilimackinac Pageant in its early years.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; three sons and their families, William and Linda, Kelly and Beth, and Richard and Mary; her daughter-in-law Mary Alexander all of Mackinaw City; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Donna Cole of Lansing, Marilyn Cole of Mackinaw City, and Irene Cole of Traverse City.

Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Thomas Alexander, and three brothers, Dr. Kenneth Cole, Merritt Cole, and Richard Cole.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Friday, August 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior to the mass at the church. It will be officiated by Father James Williams and Sister Chris Herald, assisted by Reverend David Wallis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Parish Life Center at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Nordman-Christian Funeral Home of Cheboygan is assisting the family with arrangements.
