Consider Personal Touch for Mackinac Island Phone Calls

To the Editor:

Perhaps the majority of people don’t even give this a second thought, however, being a senior citizen and a history buff, I have noticed that some of the larger Island business establishments have updated, “modernized,” their telephone answering systems and upgraded them to an answering machine or, in modern vernacular terms, they now have “voice mail.” Now, this is fine and more than likely less expensive than having an individual answer the telephone calls emanating from outside of their establishments, but, personally, I can’t help but feel that this minor step is but one more to bring Mackinac Island into the modern era of the business world. To me, I find it just one more step away from the nostalgia and one of the personal methods that the Island has always enjoyed.
