Greg Hokans Is Deserving of Article In Town Crier

To the Editor:

The Director’s Award presented to Greg Hokans in early August was well deserved.

I had the privilege of being included in the interview process when Greg was hired in 1998, and was so impressed by his warm personality, attitude, and excitement about the job that I knew right away he was the best candidate to be my new boss. We had a great talk over lunch at the Fort Mackinac Tea Room.

Greg has an unfailingly positive attitude and a great sense of humor at work and after hours. He and his wife, Mellissa, welcomed me for dinner when we were not only colleagues, but neighbors and friends living two doors down behind Fort Mackinac. When I sent him a message earlier this year to tell him I was thinking of him, in usual fashion, he thanked me, but then turned it around and said that he learned a lot from me. (He’s humble, too.)

While I worked for Greg, he was always supportive and wanted to learn everything he could about Mackinac, public relations, and any project we were working on. When I had a death in the family in 1999, while I was away from the Island, part of the Fort Mackinac wall fell down. In true Greg fashion, when I called him to touch base from metro Detroit, he said, “The place is falling apart without you.”

I distinctly remember him behind the cash register at a ticket booth, museum store, or wherever he needed to be, any day, any time, full of endless energy. He’s an inspiration. I’ve held other rewarding public relations positions since MSHP, but Mackinac, Greg, MSHP, and most everyone associated with it will always hold a special place in my heart, personally and professionally. Greg Hokans demonstrates leading by example, a genuine passion for Mackinac, family, friends, and colleagues, and he’s among the best bosses I’ve ever had.
