Kevin Barton Wins Lilac Festival Art Poster Competition

By Andrew Marlan

Kevin Barton was selected as the first place winner of the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival poster competition. His poster, featuring the Wawashkamo Golf Club, will represent the festival this year. The theme was Wawashkamo Golf Club and the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, since the site of the golf course on Mackinac Island was the scene of a battle of that war, in 1814.

Mr. Barton is a full-time professional artist and a member of the American Impressionists Society and Oil Painters of America. His artwork hangs in corporate and private collections across the country.

Eleven other individuals submitted their paintings in the contest.

Mr. Barton’s painting invites the viewer into the golf club, featuring a three dimensional scene painted on flat canvas. The historical Wawashkamo Golf Club scenery is painted featuring lilac gardens, pines, and cedars.

“As an artist my goal is to promote the philosophy that appreciating life should be an everyday activity and, in doing so, inspire those who do not themselves create. I prefer to do my work from life and on location,” said Mr. Barton.

Over the years, many people have seen Mr. Barton paint on Mackinac Island, and he enjoys engaging in conversation with those who admire his work.

“The process as well as the materials I use are all of great importance,” said Mr. Barton. “I work in oil, using the most unique and high quality colors on oil primed linen, oil primed hardboards, clear primed mahogany and birch grounds, colored gessoes and sometimes a heavyweight cotton canvas, all of which impart a unique feel and look to the final piece. These ideas converge in lucid paintings of bright, balanced colors and bold brush strokes as I create a vision of nature translated through my hand to the mind and eye to the viewer.”

Mr. Barton has received other awards, including Best of Show at Birmingham Art in the Park, a first place award in the National Masterpiece Arts Interpretation contest, and Best of Show at the Petoskey Art in the Park show. He has also had his paintings exhibited at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York City.

The art poster will be available to the public for purchase at Island galleries and shops in June. The posters will cost $9.50 and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the festival. A reception will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Wawashkamo Golf Club to honor the contestants who participated.

The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival is Friday, June 8 through Sunday, June 17.
