Lilac 10k Run/Walk Is Saturday, June 9

The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival 10K run or walk, and the Lil’ Lilac quarter mile children’s run, are both scheduled for Saturday, June 9. Starting times are 9:30 a.m. for the 10K run, and 11 a.m. for the children’s race.

An expected 800 runners and walkers will participate in the race this year. Last year’s race brought 780 participants, and Anne Gault, organizer for the event, said she expects another record year.

“Last year we had 780 and we’re pretty close to 700 now,” Mrs. Gault said. “In the last week, we get an additional hundred or so. So we could easily reach over 800.”

The race will begin in front of Windermere Point, and finish at the Mackinac Island Public School. The course will head east through downtown Mackinac

Island, turning up Truscot Lane, and then take Garrison Road and British Landing Road before heading south along Lake Shore Road.

“What people love about this race is you get all the scenery of the islands,” Mrs. Gault said. “You have the hill, and the flats, and you get to run along the shoreline and through downtown.”

The children’s race will be held at the schoolyard.

Race times are divided into age groups, including 14 and younger, 15 and 16, 17 to 19, 20 to 24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65- 69, and 70 and older. There is also a Clydesdale division for three different weight classes: 185 to 199 pounds, 200 to 219 pounds, and 220 pounds and over.

Walking age divisions are 19 and younger, 20 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, and 70 and older.

Early registration is closed, but racers are still eligible for late registration. The cost is $30 for the 10K run and walk, and $13 for the Lil’ Lilac race. Late registration and packet pickup are at the Mackinac Island school starting at 8 a.m. Participants can also register online at www.runmackinac.com

An awards ceremony follows the race, and those who cannot attend the awards ceremony must either arrange for someone to pick the awards up or make arrangements to pay for postage to ship the award.
