Lilac Festival Underway

Zhan’e Nash Zhan’e Nash The annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival will offer activities, lectures, walking tours, and entertainment, culminating in a Lilac Festival parade, Friday June 8, through Sunday, June 17. The festival celebrates the Mackinac Island community, its history, and its signature flower.

Anticipation for the Lilac Festival is high after lilacs around Mackinac Island bloomed much earlier in the season this year than usual. Perhaps the most anxious for the festival is Zhan’e Nash, the soon-to-be crowned 2012 Lilac Queen.

Mackinac Island Lilac Festival has been celebrated every year since 1949, and every year a queen is crowned.

Zhan’e will be crowned during the Coronation of the Lilac Festival Queen Saturday, June 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Windemere Point. Mayor Margaret Doud and other community members will recognize the queen and her court during the coronation, where last year’s Lilac Queen, Adrienne Rilenge, will pass the crown to Zhan’e. The ceremony is open to the public.

The ladies of this year’s Lilac Festival court are Hailey Armstrong, Kyra Kolatski, Diana Dupre, and Dana Roguska. The Lilac Princess is 9-year-old Ava Sehoyan.
