Carriage Clips Nine Bicycles; No People, Horses Are Hurt

Nine bicycles were damaged when a tour carriage team was spooked briefly near the intersection of Astor Street and Market Street Wednesday, June 20. No one, including the horses, were injured in the accident.

The bicycles were damaged after one horse was spooked around 1:15 p.m. The empty tour carriage, owned by Mackinac

Island Carriage Tours, clipped a post and continued up Astor and onto the sidewalk, damaging the parked bicycles. The bicycles were parked within parking zones.

“It didn’t go very far after it hit the bikes,” said Mackinac Island

Police Chief Jim Marks.

Brad Chambers of Carriage Tours said they are trying to figure out what would have frightened the horse.

“Something scared the horse,” he said, “but, at this moment, we don’t know what it is.”
