Medical Center Fundraiser Is Sunday
The Mackinac Island Medical Center Fundraiser will be Sunday, August 26, at 5:30 p.m. at Grand Hotel. The fundraiser will feature a number of auction items and a raffle with cash prizes of up to $5,000.
Admission is $30 per person, and includes a dinner buffet with beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Items from various Island businesses donated to the raffle and silent auction, including free hotel stays, restaurant meals, and a tour for two to the top of Mackinac Bridge. Raffle tickets cost $100 each, and 50/50 tickets are priced at six for $5. The raffle prizes include $5,000 for first prize, $3,000 for second, and $2,000 for third prize.
Last year, the event raised $76,000 for the medical center. Grand Hotel expects 400 guests to attend the annual event, which provides funds to help keep the Island’s medical center in running condition.
“It gets us through the winter,” said Kay Hoppenrath, who helped organize the event. “Even though we’re a part of Mackinac Straits Health System, there are still expenses the medical center corporation has to pay for.”
The cost of general operations and maintenance for the building and grounds are covered by the Mackinac Island Medical Center, while Mackinac Straits Health System covers costs of medical equipment and staff.
“The medical center is so critical to the Island community,” Mayor Margaret Doud said. “It’s essential for everyone on Mackinac Island. They have been extremely busy, and we’re very fortunate to have a facility like this on Mackinac Island.”
Mrs. Hoppenrath also acknowledged that businesses and individuals throughout the Straits area have contributed to the event’s success.
“Any donations to the fund- raiser are very much appreciated,” Mrs. Hoppenrath said. “We have donations coming in from almost every business on the Island.”
The dress code is resort wear or dressy casual attire for all who plan to attend.
