Mighty River Hogs, Monitors Are Victors on Base Ball Diamond
Dirk “Mac” Westbury of the Midland Mighty River Hogs runs for first in his team’s game against the Fallasburg Cubs Sunday, August 19, in Woodfill Park. Mr. Westbury was named “Fastest Ballplayer” in the 2006 Great Black Swamp Tournament, a vintage base ball tournament in Sylvania, Ohio. The Mighty River Hogs defeated the Cubs 25-18 in the championship game Sunday. “It was the longest, highest-scoring game I’ve ever seen played here,” Umpire Jason “Gypsy” Kladiva said.
Kirby “Walleye” Fisher of the Chelsea Monitors hurls the ball against the Sidney Stars in their vintage base ball game Sunday, August 19, in Woodfill Park. The Monitors defeated the Stars 13-12 in the consolation match. Vintage base ball is played regularly on Mackinac Island, using rules that pre-date those of modern baseball. - Login to post comments
