A crew from Grand Rapids refurbished the wood floor in the Mackinac Island Community Hall. Duane Simmet, owner of Flawless Flooring, installed the floor in the late 1990s, when the community center was remodeled, he said. This time, Mr. Simmet, his son, Derek, and friend Glen Baxter of Pellston began the project January 21.

During the first week of work, the team sanded and sealed the floor. Some of the boards had splintered, so the workers replaced them with new boards.

After a short delay when weather kept them from reaching the Island, they returned and applied a polyurethane coating. After completing the coating, the crew left again January 31, Mr. Simmet said.

He will make one more trip to the Island to apply non-slip strips to the staircase between the offices and community hall.

Winter is the best season for the restoration, said Mr. Simmet, because the air is not humid, which would prevent the coatings from drying.

As for working on the Island in the winter, “It is interesting,” said Mr. Simmet, who has operated Flawless Flooring for 28 years.
