(Photograph courtesy of Mackinac Island Public School) Mackinac Island: The 1974 Lakers girls basketball team, coached by Jack Dehring, is the best team in the history of the program.

Mr. Dehring, now a retired administrator, teacher, and coach, has seen every team since the first and only district championship season.

In 1974, the Lakers went undefeated at 14-0 during the regular season and then drew a bye in the three-team Class D district at Engadine. The host Eagles lost to Grand Marais in the district semifinals before the Lakers defeated the arch rival Polar Bears for the district crown.

Mackinac Island lost to Per- kins in the regional opener at Newberry, ending their successful season at 15-1.

The 1974 squad was a balanced team led by senior Jody Brown and junior Brenda Bunker. Both girls could score when the Lakers needed points, played tough defense, and rebounded well. The remaining members played key roles, including Melinda Horn, Sandy Gallagher, Barb Gillespie, Florence Gillespie, Susan St. Onge, Doris St. Onge, Judy Bazinaw, Denise Arseneau, Joyce Olson, and Cindy Cadotte.

The Lakers had a blend of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen and everyone contributed to the Class D district championship.
