Grace Johnson


Grace Johnson Grace Johnson Grace E. Johnson, who spent many summers at the Harold Warp Cottage on Mackinac Island’s West Bluff, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013, at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, Illinois. She was 96.

She was born Grace Glende August 9, 1916, and was graduated in 1934 from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. She was vice president for a condominium builder in Pompano Beach, Florida, for many years and was a model for Jordan Marsh department stores in the mid-1960s. She was a resident of Schaumburg, Illinois, for many years.

She made many friends on Mackinac Island, where she resided with her good friend and long-time companion, Harold Warp. Mr. Warp’s son, Harold G. Warp, who has remained close to her after his father’s death, said Mrs. Johnson “enjoyed life with her friends, her summers at Mackinac Island, and winters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was an avid reader and always looked forward to catching up with the news of her friends in The Mackinac Island Town Crier.”

She leaves a daughter and her family, Georgiann and Robert Walden; a son and his family, Ronald and Norvette Johnson; three grandchildren and their families, Susan Hughes, Ronald and Kristina Johnson, and Jeannie and Michael Beebe; seven greatgrandchildren, Travis Lincoln, Katie Hughes, Lauren Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Cierra Johnson, Cole Beebe, and Kayla Beebe; a sister, Arlene Relth; a brother and his family, Ralph and Joan Glende, and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are longtime friends Harold G. “Skip” Warp, his wife Mary, and his children and their families, Christopher and Melissa Warp and Becky and Jan van der Woerd XIV.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott F. Johnson, a grandchild, Thomas Macchio, a brother-in-law, Erwin Relth, and long-time friend Harold Warp.

A funeral was at Ahlgrim and Sons Funeral Home in Schaumburg Thursday, April 4.

Interment was at Pompano Beach Cemetery.
