Snowmobile Accident Claims Life of Island Resident

A Mackinac Island resident, Rebecca Mentzer, 51, was killed Monday, March 4, after losing control of her snowmobile on M- 185 about two miles northwest of downtown. Ms. Mentzer worked for Cindy’s Riding Stables.

The accident occurred just before

6 p.m. near Humbard’s Ski Hill. Police say Ms. Mentzer’s vehicle left the designated snowmobile trail and struck a tree. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Poor road conditions do not appear to have caused the accident.

She had one passenger with her, also a resident of Mackinac Island, who was thrown from the vehicle just before it crashed. The passenger was unharmed.

The accident is still under investigation.
