Small Fire Knocks Out Power May 9

An electrical line on Mackinac Island near Cloverland Electric Cooperative’s substation burned Thursday, May 9, causing a power outage for 120 customers.

The Mackinac Island Fire Department responded to the situation, said Assistant Fire Chief Sam Barnwell. As the downed line rested on the ground, it started a small fire. Firefighters extinguished it, and electrical company crews restored power, said Wendy Malaska of Cloverland. Power was restored by 6:20 p.m. that evening and the cause of the burned line is unknown.
