Dredging Underway; Will Not Impact Races
The Mackinac Island marina will be temporarily closed to boaters who do not have reservations from Monday, July 8, to Saturday, July 13, to allow it to be dredged.
The dredging will not affect the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac, which will take place this weekend, harbormaster Derrick Horn told the Town Crier. Dredging will be completed Saturday, and boats are not expected to reach the harbor until Sunday, July 14, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. depending on weather conditions, Mr. Horn said.
Boats that already reserved slips in the harbor are being moved as needed to accommodate dredging, and sediment removed from the Island harbor is being off-loaded in Cheboygan and destined for a landfill, he added.
Boaters can use marinas in St. Ignace and Mackinaw City while the Island facility is closed.
