Election Day Is Tuesday

Election Day in Mackinac County is Tuesday, August 6. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters on Mackinac Island will see a request for senior citizen services on the ballot. Community Action Agency is seeking voter approval for a 0.25 mill tax levy from 2013 through 2017, to avoid cuts to senior citizen services generated by ongoing reductions in state and federal funding.

Funds generated in Mackinac County would be used only in Mackinac County.

The millage would generate approximately $234,000 a year. The revenue would cover a budget shortfall of about $80,000 this year and provide enhancements for the adult day care Take 5 program, Meals on Wheels, and meals at senior centers throughout the county. It would also enable Community Action to alleviate waiting lists for in-home services such as homemaker aid, personal care, and a respite care program.

The special election on the matter is called by the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners. Voters in all precincts of the county will see the senior citizen services request on the ballot.
