Mackinac Island Vacation Bible School Brings Children Together

Led by young adults from Youth Encounter, a Christian youth ministry from St. Paul, Minnesota, children of all ages joined in joyful song praising God. That was part of Vacation Bible School, bringing children together.

Jennifer Callewaert helps coordinate the program that takes place for a week each year in July. Throughout the week, children are placed in different age groups to participate in activities including arts and crafts, such as making frames and tie-dye shirts, watching a magic show, and giving out brownies and

Everything at Vacation Bible School has a faithful theme, Ms. Callewaert said. It can be making a Bible verse inscribed in a frame or hand-printing hearts on cards to give to loved ones, she said.

“We have the message that Jesus is love, but also, we have a responsibility to go out and bear witness to the gifts that he’s given us,” Ms. Callewaert said in regard to the purpose of the hearts.

Before the morning session began, Brother Jim Boynton, S.J. from Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church led the teachers and assistants in a devotional. Teachers and assistants included Ben Schultz, Andrew Wingren, Dana Hamerla, Kristen Thompson, Matt Neuer, Tom Montie, Jill Montie, Barb Kovalak, Carol Rearick, Deb Styburski, Ann Levy, Molly Carroll, Ginny Smoot, Jennifer Callewaert, Emily Modd, Vince Carroll, Brother Jim Boynton, Barbara Jean Hubel, Val Porter, Marta Timmons, and Riley Parish.

About 40 children attended this year’s camp, including Andrew Brisson, Matt Brisson, Clara Chambers,Jackson Ellinger, Parker Ellinger, Jordan Fisher, Jenavieve Fisher, Madison Gamble, Penelope Graham, Sarah Growney, Brigid Hegarty, Anna Kaminen, Jack Kaminen, Derby Kromer, Kristina Lynch, Teddy Lynch, John Lewis McLeod, Kiera McManus, Margaret McLeod, Maura Mc- Manus, LiLian Modd, Lilly Parish, Alexandra Pokora, Enzo Pulte, Hugo Pulte, Lily Schoenborn, Ava Seebohm, Brendan Shockley, Colin Shockley, Declan Shockley, Hannah Styburski, Mabel Styburski, and Ottilia Styburski.

Youth Encounter member Ben Schultz said his group travels all over the country working with many congregations visiting schools, churches, and prisons. He said working with the children is his favorite part.

“(We) have been doing a lot of games with the kids… and doing music at the beginning and end of the day,” Mr. Schultz said. “It’s so much fun when we’re sent out to go play with kids. Playing with kids is the best part of our job.”

Kristina Lynch, 13, from Chicago, said she looks forward to this school each summer.

“They’re very energetic, welcoming and fun to be around,” she said. “I’ve been coming here for years.”

As Jackson Ellinger, 9, simply explained, the children couldn’t get enough of the games and songs.

“Anybody can come,” he said, “and everybody would enjoy it.”
