Wawashkamo to Host Hickory Classic

Wawashkamo Golf Club is calling all golfers to its 2013 Wawashkamo National Hickory Stick Classic Saturday, August 17, at 9:45 a.m. The tournament has a unique requirement that all participants must play with clubs made before 1935, said Wawashkamo head golf professional Chuck Olson.

The old hickory shafted clubs are very different than the clubs used today, Mr. Olson said. Back then, there was no way to put them into a mold to make standardized clubs so each set was handmade and unique.

The tournament’s location on Mackinac Island, playing on the historic Wawashkamo course, which is 115 years old, and with clubs 100 to 150 years old, makes the tournament a distinct competition in the golf world, said Mr. Olson.

The classic tournaments with historic equipment are a current national trend, with about 50 competitions in the U.S. during the summer, Mr. Olson said. He expects about 50 participants in this year’s tournament.

After the golf tournament there will be a celebration and fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. at The Inn at Stonecliffe with dinner, cocktails, auction, and music with Dave Cisco.

To register, call Wawashkamo Golf Course at (906) 847-3871.
