Labor Day Weekend Race Honors Former Commodore

Regatta Winner To Get Kiener Cup

To honor the late club commodore Andy Kiener, this year’s Horn’s Bar Labor Day Regatta first in fleet will receive the “Andy Kiener Cup.”

The annual race around Mackinac Island is Saturday, August 31.

Mr. Kiener served as commodore of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club in 2011 and 2012. During this time, Mr. Kiener led the club through its 75th anniversary and established the Round the Island Race. In 2011, He was honored by the U.S. Sailing Race Management Committee as a Race Officer Emeritus for a long career in race management, which spanned nearly 40 years. Mr. Kiener died May 27, 2013.

“He was a great guy, great guy,” Mackinac Island Yacht Club race chair David Rowe said. “He was just a real avid sailboat racer and promoter. He did so much for the club and the community.”

The regatta is open to all classes of sailboats and there is no entry fee. After the race, Horn’s Bar and the Yankee Rebel Tavern will host an awards ceremony and party at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club.
