Two New Teachers, One Aide, Approved by School Board

By Noriah Williams

The Mackinac Public School Board approved the hiring of two new teachers and one aide at its meeting, Thursday, August 15.

Chelsea Berkshire was approved for the pre-school, kindergarten, and PACE teacher position. Lake Sweet was approved for the position of special education teacher and Louann Mosley was approved as the aide to the preschool room.

The board also unanimously approved a 1% increase for all staff other than teachers. This increase would affect janitorial, secretarial, cook, aides, and superintendent positions. A motion was made during the meeting by board president Jason St. Onge to include the specific positions in the contract. This increase would be a total cost of $1,200 to the school.

Teacher Susan Bennett made the announcement that the school will no longer use PowerSchool, an online student information system, for the upcoming school year. The entire ISD, said Ms. Bennett, will soon be switching as the state is pushing everyone to a common information system.

Board president Jason St. Onge brought forth a proposal made by the public school teaching staff to be allowed to donate personal sick days to a non-teaching staff member.

Previously, teachers were only allowed to donate to fellow teachers. The donation proposal was limited to 10 days per employee, with the donations done in writing and must be done by August 30. The board considered the proposal a special case and supported the action.
