Richard Smith, Sr.


Richard Smith, Sr. Richard Smith, Sr. Richard Marvin Smith, Sr., 76, of St. Ignace, passed away Wednesday evening, August 14, 2013, at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey.

He was born May 19, 1937, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Marvin Sr. and Edith (nee Closs) Smith.

Mr. Smith retired from the Mackinac Island State Park after more than 32 years of service.

He was a painter, and he also loved to sing and play piano, even though a hunting accident when he was a teenager led to the loss of his left arm. A great baseball player before his accident, Mr. Smith was a dedicated Detroit Tigers fan. Mr. Smith also enjoyed his garden on Lant Road after he retired.

He is survived by two sons and their families, Richard Smith Jr. and Tracy McCluskey of St. Ignace and Brian Smith and Jamie Wallace of Kincheloe; a daughter and her family, Lisa and LeRoy Sayles of Moran; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and their families, Gene Smith of St. Ignace and Keith and Debora Smith of Carp Lake, and a sister and her family, Joy and Tim Gulick of Brimley.

A celebration of Mr. Smith’s life will be Saturday, August 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW Post in St. Ignace. Burial will be Gros Cap Cemetery at a later date.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.
