Grand Hotel to Host Base Ball

Grand Hotel will host vintage base ball games for the fourth and final time this year Saturday, September 7. Admission to the games is free and they will be played at Woodfill Park near Grand Hotel’s tennis courts.

Vintage base ball is played by 1860s rules that differ from the standard game of today. The changes include not allowing the use of gloves, and both fair and foul balls caught after one bounce are still considered an out.

Saturday’s contests will involve four teams, with each playing in reproductions of vintage uniforms. The Petoskey Mossbacks will represent northern Michigan, with two teams travelling from Dearborn’s Greenfield Village, the Nationals and the Lah-De-Dahs. There will also be one team from out of state with the Chicago-area Aurora Town Club making the trip north to take part. Both teams will play two games over the course of the day. The Mossbacks are the only one of the four teams that has already played on the Island this year; they played a doubleheader against Chelsea Monitors at Grand Hotel May 18.

Games will be played throughout the day, roughly scheduled to start every hours commencing with a 10 a.m. game between the Nationals and the Aurora Town Club. The second game between the Lah-De- Dahs and the Mossbacks will follow at noon.

The Mossbacks will play again at 2 p.m. against the Nationals. The day’s action will conclude with a game between the Lah-De-Dahs and the Aurora Town Club at 4 p.m.
