Work Begins on New Base for Statue of Liberty

Mackinac Island’s Statue of Liberty replica will be reinstalled this summer in a more prominent location on the lawn near the state marina across the street from Marquette Park. American Legion Post 299 spearheaded the fundraising effort to refurbish and reinstall the statue, but Post Commander Paul Wandrie said, “The credit goes to the people who helped us.” After removing the statue in late 2012 for refurbishment, the American Legion reached its fundraising goal this January. The project broke ground Wednesday morning, May 7, and Mr. Wandrie called the occasion “Tremendously exciting.” He is pictured (from right) with contractors Jack Barnwell of Barnwell Landscape and Garden Services on Mackinac Island, Chad Belonga of Belonga Excavating in St. Ignace, Aaron Winberg of Aaron Winberg Masonry in St. Ignace, and Harbormaster Derek Horn.
