Service Planned at Veterans Memorial

Mackinac Island’s American Legion Post will host its annual Memorial Day service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 26.

American Legion Post 299 has hosted the Memorial Day service since 2005, and Post Commander Paul Wandrie will lead this year’s observance at the downtown Veterans Memorial.

“What I want people to get out of the service is that Memorial Day is not just a holiday to have a three-day weekend and go shopping or to Walt Disney World, but a day to remember those who gave up their lives so we could be free enough to do those things,” Mr. Wandrie said.

Mr. Wandrie will present his research on three Mackinac Island Civil War veterans, Henry Graveraet, Garrett Graveraet, and Harrison Hamel, who were killed in action in 1864.

Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud will also speak at the service, and it will conclude when the American flag will be hoisted to full staff.

“Many lost their lives serving this country…,” Mr. Wandrie said. “We want to make sure people continue to have those freedoms.”
