Ordinance Committee to Meet

A meeting will be scheduled soon for the Ordinance Committee to discuss Flagship’s request to change its business license to a garden shop and to consider a request from an Atlantic City, New Jersey, company to start a rolling chair business on the Island.

To address the first issue, the committee will consider updating its business license ordinance to more clearly define what constitutes a garden shop. The ordinance bans outdoors displays and was first written to prevent the Love Shack and other stores from hawking their wares outdoors, but amended to accommodate a new garden store at Grand Hotel.

City attorney Tom Evashevski suggested the city establish an ordinance clearly addressing human-powered modes of transportation, like rolling chairs and rickshaws, to address the city’s common practice of not allowing such businesses because of congestion and safety concerns.
