Theme Announced for 2015 Poster Contest

The theme for the 2015 Lilac Festival poster contest will be Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Little Stone Church on deck to be featured in the 2016 contest, completing the church series for the poster.

Mary McGuire Slevin, who has organized the contest for the Tourism Bureau over the past decade, said judges use established criteria to select winners from among the entries.

First, she said, judges look at the theme and score the work on how well the theme is reflected in it.

Stylistic devices are also noted, and she asks the judges, “Does the artist use movement to piece together different parts of the work of art through line and color to ensure your eyes move around the canvas and to the theme?

Judges also study the scale and proportion of the figures in the painting, and note whether the composition is reflective of what one would see on Mackinac Island.

And finally, the judges look for any emotion the painting may evoke in the viewer, such as nostalgia, empathy, or joy.

Judging the entries this year were Jane Bacon, Bart Berkshire, Garima Thakur, Jill Sawatzki, Nicole Smith Doud, Marie Steensma, and Brenda Horton.
