NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

The flowers all over Mackinac Island are outstanding. Metivier Inn’s gardens are beautiful. Dwight LaPine and Jeff Shaffer’s garden on French Lane is just beautiful and the aroma from their lilies is wonderful. Many places have huge, white hydrangeas. With the bright, sunny days and cool evenings, it has been a great year for flowers. Folks are enjoying the wonderful sunrises and sunsets and the moon shining down on the Straits of Mackinac.

People are looking forward to the Jazz Festival at Grand Hotel Friday, August 29, Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31. A lot of great music is sure to be enjoyed by all.

Sunday, August 24, the Woodfill Center at Grand Hotel was filled with more than 350 people who came to participate in the Mackinac Island Medical Center Auction. It was a fun-filled evening, with Robin Dorman serving as master of ceremonies and auctioneer David Levy getting folks to bid on a package to Beaver Island, beautiful paintings by local artists, several boat cruises, football tickets, and many other items. Everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner and waited for the big drawings. The 50/50 raffle was won by Laurie Raiger. The first prize of $5,000 was won by Chad Osbourne. The second prize of $3,000 was won by Reg Gough, and Cathy Schadel won the third prize of $2,000. More than $85,000 was raised for the Mackinac Island Medical Center. The Mackinac Island Medical Center is a great facility with a super staff and is an important part of our community. We appreciate Grand Hotel and the Musser family, Vic Callewaert and Trish Bunker for selling raffle tickets, all of our friends from St. Ignace who joined in the festivities, and everyone who donated, worked, or attended to make the auction so successful.


In a score of 21-12, the combined forces of Mackinac Island’s police and fire departments demolished the St. Ignace squad in the annual Guns and Hoses softball game Sunday, August 17. About $1,500 was raised from the event to go toward the Community Foundation’s Mark Gallagher Scholarship Fund. Everyone is invited to a picnic Tuesday, September 2, at noon at the Mackinac Island Public School to celebrate the beginning of the new school year, and also to salute Karen Allen on her retirement after 25 years of teaching on Mackinac Island. Come and join in the festivities.

Former Governor Jim and Janet Blanchard recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Mackinac Island, where they were married. They attended the Saturday, August 23, wedding of Kate Austin and Stephen Early, who were married by Reverend Fred Zobel at Little Stone Church. The reception was held at the Island House. Kate’s parents had attended the Blanchard wedding, and Kate’s mother recalls she carried Kate, then two years old, across the Mackinac Bridge for the Labor Day Walk.

Dusty Coleman, who works with Clark Bunker at Grand Hotel in maintenance, races cars. He raced at the Chippewa County Fair in Kinross Tuesday, August 26. After the race, a celebration was held at Melissa and Joe Meehan’s home in Dafter.

Monday evening, August 25, during the televised Emmy Awards, Anna Gunn, granddaughter of the late Ida and Clem Gunn, won an Emmy for her role in “Breaking Bad.” The Gunns lived on Mackinac Island for many years, and Clem was mayor.

The Grand Garden Show was held at Grand Hotel Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26. Beautiful arrangements, tours of gardens, and lectures by P. Allen Smith, Jon Carloftis, and Jack Barnwell were enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Paul Wandrie, post commander of American Legion Post 299, reports that they will not clean headstones Sunday, August 31, but instead will clean them Sunday, September 7. Members of the American Legion Post 299 have done an outstanding job cleaning the headstones in the cemeteries.

Dan and Dorothy Hesslin of Manistee enjoyed three days at the Windermere Hotel.

Thursday, August 21, golfers came from far and near to participate in the golf tournament that benefits Mackinac Straits Health System and Mackinac Island Medical Center. Golfers played at the Woods, Wawashkamo, and The Jewel. A reception and dinner followed at Woods Restaurant. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time.

Jeannie Wellington and a friend from Sault Ste. Marie attended The Grand Garden Show Monday, August 25, on Mackinac Island.

Family and friends gathered Saturday, August 23, to surprise Andrew Doud with a 40th birthday celebration. His son, Louis Michael, was the star of the gathering. Nicole’s parents, Lee and Dori Smith, and her two brothers from Saint Johns joined in the festivities. Everyone had a great time.

Jody, Emma, Clara, Maggie, and Richard Chambers attended the wedding of Kristin Holzman and Matt Giering in Lansing Friday, August 22. Emma and Clara were members of the wedding party. Kristin was Emma’s roommate at Ferris State University. Everyone had a great time. Maggie and her friend, Eric, came back to Mackinac Island for a week before returning to college.

There will be a Patriot Day service Thursday, September 11, at 6 p.m. in front of City Hall.

Bill and Ann Taylor and Dennis and Clarice Lewis of Ohio spent several days at the Windermere Hotel. They attended the Mackinac Island Medical Center Auction at Grand Hotel Sunday, August 24.

Congratulations to Pete Olson, who was recently promoted to Vice President of Academic Affairs at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey. His daughters, Brita and Kaia, were home to join in the celebration.

Claire Dunnigan visited Mackinac Island this past weekend before she departed for a flight to the Netherlands.

Bill and Tammie McDonough of Beaver Island were on Mackinac Island Saturday, August 23, to help Andrew Doud celebrate his 40th birthday.

Ken and Christina Stupak of California joined Bart and Laurie Stupak in the celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary at Grand Hotel Sunday, August 24.

The annual Mark Gallagher Golf Open was held Saturday, August 23, at Grand Hotel’s Woods Nine Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Mark Gallagher Scholarship Fund at Mackinac Island Community Foundation. Everyone had a great time.

It’s nice to see Sara Bunker of Orlando, Florida, visiting her parents, Larry and Irene Rickley, and her brother, Larry, and his family.

Jason St. Onge entertained his brother, Eric St. Onge, and his family, and his parents, Glenn and Deana St. Onge, this past weekend. They played in the Mark Gallagher Golf Open Saturday, August 23.
