Volleyball to Host Districts; Face Rebuilding Season

Mackinac Island will host its first Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament when the Lakers volleyball squad will entertain the Class D playoffs during the week of November 3 to 10. St. Ignace, Newberry, Engadine, and Beaver Island will join the Lakers in the districts.

“We are happy and proud to host the MHSAA tournament,” said superintendent and athletic director Dave Waaso. “We have a nice facility and the people on the Island are happy to have this event.”

Terrie Armstrong, in her 10th season as the Lakers head coach, will face a rebuilding season after Hailey Armstrong, Amelia Roe, and Mary Schockling were graduated.

Strong Roster to Carry Lakers Into Soccer Season

The Mackinac Island soccer program is more than 20 years old and this season the Lakers are one of the teams selected to win the Northern Lights League championship.

Thirteen returning players will build the squad in preparation for a strong schedule. Mary Patay has coached at Mackinac Island for more than 15 years.

Seniors in their final season are Kyra Kolatski, Kyle Shunk, Jeremy Hepker, and Will Barnwell, and the entire junior class of three athletes, Peyton Waaso, Molly Tokarz, and Tyler Pereny will lead the underclassman. Remaining returnees include sophomores Chris Riggs and Christian Styburski, freshmen Nick Davis and Gabe Kromer, and eighth grade athletes Gabriel Hepker and Aaron Riggs.

“We are excited about the upcoming season with our returning players,” said Coach Patay. “This is a strong group of athletes that want to win. Mackinac Island, Hannahville, and Grand Marais will be the top teams in the conference.”

The Lakers will open the schedule with home games against Concord Academy of Boyne City and Whitmore Prescott. The remaining games are Northern Lights League doubleheaders with Paradise, Grand Marais, Munising Baptist, Hannahville, and Beaver Island. Munising Baptist will host the league tourney Saturday, October 18.
