4-H Offers ‘Help A Horse’ Camp

Volunteering and caring for horses will be the focus of the Mackinac Island 4-H club’s “Help a Horse” camp that will take place at Great Turtle Park Tuesday, July 28, through Thursday, July 30.

Not only will participants be able to decorate their bicycles and create horse-themed crafts, but they will help groom and care for the horses of Mackinac Island and learn more about 4-H club leader Jennifer Sulkowski’s experience in adopting her horses Diesel and Paradise from the Last Chance Corral in Athens, Ohio.

The Last Chance Corral is a farm dedicated to rehabilitating nurse mare foals, horses born on racehorse farms for the sole purpose of keeping pregnant stock horses around to feed the more valuable racehorse foals. Nurse mare foals are usually put down or are sickly because they are not able to nurse after they are born.
