Art Rocks the Boat Fundraiser Will Be July 28

The Mackinac Arts Council will host an Art Rocks the Boat fundraising cruise aboard a Star Line boat Tuesday, July 28, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Joshua Davis and his band will perform during the cruise. Tickets cost $60, and all of the funds generated will be donated to the school’s art and music program so that new instruments, such as xylophones, marimbas, and keyboards, can be purchased and so that students can take a field trip to the Cheboygan Opera House.

Art and music programs keep students motivated to do well in school, said Mackinac Arts Council board member Urvana Morse, and contributes to a well-rounded education.

“The school’s art and music program adds more dimension to a student’s life and brings them joy during their school day,” said Mrs. Morse.

In addition, Mrs. Morse believes that the program helps to expose students to different creative outlets and that the exposure may spark the students’ creativity. The program also helps students find their individuality and grow as a young artist and musician, and this growth is noted by Heather May, the art and music teacher at Mackinac Island Public School.

“I love being able to see the students grow and excel while they’re playing music and creating art. The creative outlets that music and art provide have a large impact on their confidence. I’ve noticed that art and music even helps the shy students come out of their shells,” said Ms. May.

Those interested in purchasing tickets are asked to contact Urvana Morse at (231) 818- 2481.
